How to create the ultimate bed when camping.

There’s no better feeling than collapsing into your swag or tent at the end of a long day exploring! It’s especially important to get a good night’s sleep when you’re on the road so we think your bed should be just as important as the rest of your camp set up!

Everyone has their own preferences, but we thought we’d run you through our own bed set up with some handy hints that could be used across any type of mattress or tent! So, we’ll start from the bottom up!

1.    The base. We recently bought a 2nd hand James Baroud roof top tent and the guy we bought it off had put foam matting underneath the mattress which gives you some extra support and also adds a barrier between the mattress and the base of the tent. You can buy a pack of 4 Eva Foam Floor Mats from Bunnings for $10 and just cut the edges to size. Or alternatively you could go to Clark rubber and get one large piece cut to size in store but it’s an easy and cheap way to add some extra comfort.

2.    Two words, mattress topper. This is a game changer in creating the comfiest bed when camping. There are so many different types out there so get one that suits your preference of firm or soft. You’ll struggle to find one to fit your custom mattress perfectly but just measure your mattress and buy one that is the closest fit, and it should be able to stretch over your mattress so the majority of it is covered.

3.    Secret tip: This is our favourite trick for having an extra cosy night sleep. Place a woollen blanket under your fitted sheet. We did this once when we were camping in the Blue Mountains and we weren’t ready for the cold temps, we placed one of our wool blankets underneath us and it acted like an electric blanket! By putting it under your fitted sheet means it won’t move around or end up at the end of the bed.

4.    Fitted sheet: Some tent brands do sell fitted sheets for their custom sized mattresses but if you can’t get one you can easily make one! We’ve shared a DIY fitted mattress on our reels today so if you want to get your sew on and make your own check that out. Otherwise just buy a King or Super King size fitted sheet as that will cover it and you’ll just have to tuck any of the excess fabric underneath when making the bed!

5.    The toppings. And lastly, we like to take our pillows and doona from our bed at home just for a bit of comfort, but we also take a sleeping bag just encase it gets cooler. It’s up to you what you like to sleep with but definitely make sure you have a good pillow to support your neck.

And that’s it! That’s everything you need to create the ultimate comfy bed when you’re on the road. Happy sleeping wanderers!
