Where are you from? Ferny Creek, Melbourne

Where are you currently? Home

What is your current/future travel plans? We just wrapped up our half lap of Aus. In 7 weeks we headed across the Nullarbor and explored the South West corner of WA, then followed the coast up to Exmouth. We then headed inland and explored Karijini National Park and then travelled along the Garry Junction Road through to the centre, exploring Yulara and its surrounds. Then with a few headaches and permits we headed into SA to get home just before lockdown number 5.

Future travel plans? Where to begin!? We’d obviously love to explore more of Aus and complete the other half of the lap. WA was incredible, we could easily go back and spend way more time exploring over there. Our long-term plan/dream would be to send our car overseas and explore Canada, America, and South America – maybe even up into Alaska! But with old mate Covid that’s not possible right now so in the meantime we’ll continue to save (and dream up more amazing plans).

Details of your set up?

We have a 2016 Toyota Hilux, (affectionately known as Hank) with a James Baroud Evo roof top tent. We have draws set up in the back with our kitchen, Engle fridge and all our other gear. On our recent trip we took out the back seats of the car and Andy built us draws for our wardrobes, which worked really well. My favourite part of our set up is probably the shower, Andy installed this just before we left, and it was a game changer! Having a hot shower after a long drive (or after a few days without a shower) was such a luxury. I think Andy would agree with the shower, that, or the paper towel holder! He loves that thing.

Dream set up?

My dream set up would be a Troopy, with a pop top tent and a third door installed for access to the back seats. I know it would be squeezey and totally unrealistic, but I have this vision of opening the back door and having our future kids and dogs all come running out the back together. It wouldn’t be anything flashy, we’d probably need a couple of ground tents, but I don’t mind the idea of going back to basics.

I think Andy’s dream set up would look like a dual cab LandCruiser with some type of camper.

Favourite travel destination so far? (One you’ve driven too)

Again so hard to pick just one place, but we’ll go with somewhere from our recent trip. We absolutely loved Exmouth and the surrounding area. So many amazing beaches, walks, campsites, station stays and of course breweries! Being able to park up on a beach and walk straight into an amazing reef filled with the most incredible sea life, including sea turtles is pretty hard to beat!

Favourite thing about living on the road?

The freedom it gives you. Having no set plans, living day to day, exploring new places; it’s such a simple and beautiful way to live. I also love the community of like-minded travellers and the mate-ship that is built instantly when you meet other people on the road. It’s just the best experience and we love it!
