Life's a Picnic.

Picnic season is well and truly upon us! Not only is the weather finally warming up but as Victoria comes out of lockdown picnics and outdoor gatherings are looking like our only option to catching up with our friends and families.

We have always been pro picnics, even PC (pre Covid). To us eating outdoors is part of Australian life. Nothing beats some fish and chips on the beach or a BBQ in the bush surrounded by your loved ones and of course a bevy, or two!

So, we’ve pulled together our top tips for lifting your picnic game this season!

1 – It seems obvious, but a picnic rug is a non-negotiable! Even on the sunniest of days there’s nothing worse than sitting in the itchy grass worrying about the creepy crawlies and ending up with grass stains on your clothes! A rug gives you a good base to build your outdoor setting on and just makes it more enjoyable. Dust off the old velcro picnic rug you were given as present years ago (we all have one) or treat yourself to a fancy new rug, (Sneaky plug – check out our new rugs here https://www.wanderingsandco.com/goods).

2 – Picnic basket. I’m definitely a bit old school but I love a good old wicker picnic basket! Don’t get me wrong the green bags straight from the shops definitely do the trick but there’s something so nice about having a basket filled with all your goodies! There are plenty of cool new ones out there, but you can’t go wrong checking out your local op shop or vintage market first! This is ours that I picked up for $30 from Market Fair in Ferntree Gully (one of my favourite vintage shops).

3 – Proper utensils. There’s nothing worse than sipping some rose out of a plastic cup or trying to cut a slice of cheese with a plastic knife. We recommend finding some good picnic sets with quality plates, glasses and cutlery. It will take your picnic from camping to glamping in no time and make the whole experience a lot more enjoyable. A good tip if you don’t want to take proper cutlery is to pre cut your food before you leave so that way you can just sit down and enjoy your spread!

Our enamel set is the perfect thing to kick start your picnic gear.

4 – Food and drink. This is really up to you but just make sure you have a good spread of savoury and sweet! If you’re meeting up with friends, look at splitting the food amongst the group so you don’t end up with 2 Camemberts and 3 Sweet Potato and Cashew dips (although I’m not sure I’d really be complaining about that). Also buying a cool bag is the best idea, especially for Australian summers you want to be able to keep things a little cold! And if you want to go into full mum mode, you can even invest in some of those blue ice blocks. (Did I really just say that!)

5 – Tunes! Nothing beats hanging with your mates, outdoors enjoying good food and drink so the only way to make it better is by having a playlist of your fav songs playing in the background. Click the link below to hear our go to playlists that’s sure to bring all the vibes!

Of course, there’s lots of other things! Our next top 5 would be: Sunnies, a hat, sunscreen, bug spray and of course a rubbish bag! But we think these 5 are the absolute essentials to ensuring your picnics are top notch!

Happy picnicking!
